Scientist – Bioprocess Development (4-Month Contract, Full-Time, Possible Extension)

Location: Near Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada (on-site)

Start Date: February 2026

About BryoSphere Biotechnologies

BryoSphere  Biotechnologies is a synthetic biology startup focused on engineering  moss and other plant systems to produce high-value bioactive ingredients  for skincare and cosmetics. We combine plant biochemistry, metabolic  engineering, and bioprocess development to create sustainable,  high-performance ingredients.

We’re a small, dynamic  team, and this role offers the opportunity to work directly on  cutting-edge biomanufacturing processes in an innovative environment.

Position Overview

We  are seeking a full-time PhD level Scientist for an initial 4-month  contract (with the possibility of extension) at our Nova Scotia  location. The ideal candidate has strong hands-on experience in  bioprocessing, including cultivation and scale-up of biological systems  such as plants, algae, or microbes. Experience in chemical or analytical  characterization is a plus.

This role involves  designing, running, and optimizing experiments related to moss culture  growth, production yields, and process development for bioactive  compound production.

Responsibilities:

  • Run and optimize plant/moss bioprocesses (bubble columns and photobioreactors).
  • Monitor and adjust process parameters (light intensity, pH, aeration, nutrients).
  • Develop experimental plans for growth optimization and yield improvement.
  • Collect and analyze biological and process data (e.g., biomass yield, metabolite production, optical density).
  • Support chemical analyses of extracts and metabolites using HPLC, LC-MS, or spectrophotometric methods.
  • Collect and analyze process data and maintain detailed records.
  • Communicate results and contribute to process improvements.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Bioprocess Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related field.
  • Hands-on experience in bioprocessing, fermentation, or cell culture (plant, algal, or microbial).
  • Familiarity with monitoring and controlling process parameters (e.g., pH, temperature, light intensity).
  • Strong practical skills in lab-scale bioreactor operations or equivalent culture systems.
  • Excellent organization, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and troubleshoot in a wet lab setting.
  • Experience with plant or moss cultures or other photoautotrophic systems (preferred).
  • Familiarity with metabolite production and optimization strategies (preferred).
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques (HPLC, LC-MS, spectrophotometry) (preferred).
  • Enthusiasm for working in an early-stage biotech environment and contributing across disciplines.
